My honest review of Pumpkin pet insurance
The best reputation of the panel, at a price that demands attention
My rating lands at 3.1 out of 5, and it is a rating with two floors. The experience floor is the best of the panel: number one on Trustpilot with 90 percent five-star reviews, exam fees in the base plan, a 90 percent default rate, PumpkinNow defusing the cash advance on emergencies, and no age or breed gate at the door. The contract floor is thinner: a premium above the market that has already shown a steep renewal curve, pre-existing requalifications on recurring conditions in the complaint files, and two gaps between the site and the 2025 policy wording, on waiting periods and behavioral care, that only your state form can settle. If you want the strongest service experience available and can carry the premium at senior ages, this is the reputation leader. Before signing, quote the age-8 price next to at least one cheaper uncapped competitor and read your state's waiting period line yourself.
PumpkinNow sends up to 90 percent of a qualifying emergency bill to your account before you pay the vet. It is an advance to the owner, not a payment to the clinic.
Before you sign with Pumpkin, take two minutes. Three lines in this contract deserve a closer look: the waiting periods, which differ between the 2025 policy wording and the public pages; PumpkinNow, which sends money to you rather than paying your clinic; and a premium that starts above the market and climbs at renewal. The rest of the picture is genuinely strong. Launched in 2020 by animal-health giant Zoetis and majority-owned by JAB since 2023, the brand reimburses 90 percent as standard where most competitors default to 80, includes exam fees in the base plan, and holds the number one Trustpilot profile among US pet insurers. I have been through the 2025 policy wording, a standard United States Fire Insurance Company form, to sort the marketing from the contract.

Pros
- Exam fees included in the base plan, on accident and illness visits alike
- 90 percent reimbursement as the default setting, where the market defaults to 80
- Trustpilot 4.8, ranked first of 17 US pet insurers, with 90 percent five-star reviews
- PumpkinNow sends up to 90 percent of qualifying emergency bills before you pay
- No upper age limit and no breed restrictions at enrollment
Cons
- Premium above the market average, with a documented renewal curve (53 to 96 dollars a month in three years for one dog)
- Recurring conditions requalified as pre-existing in complaint files
- Waiting periods and behavioral care differ between the 2026 site and the 2025 policy wording
- Preventive Essentials not sold in ME, MT, RI or WA, and it is not an insurance product
- Young brand (2020) with two ownership changes and a short renewal track record

What does Pumpkin pet insurance cover?
| Coverage | Accident & Illness plan |
|---|---|
| Reimbursement rate | 80 or 90 %, with 90 % as the default setting |
| Annual payout limit | $5,000 up to unlimited, chosen at enrollment |
| Annual deductible | $100 to $1,000 |
| Accidents | Covered |
| Illnesses | Covered |
| Exam fees | Included in the base plan, accident and illness visits included |
| Dental illness | Advertised at no extra fee on the 2026 site |
| Behavioral care | Advertised, but the 2025 policy wording lists behavioral problems as excluded |
| Preventive care | Via the Preventive Essentials add-on, refunded at 100 % (not sold in ME, MT, RI, WA) |
| Choice of veterinarian | Any licensed vet in the US and Canada |
Waiting periods
| Accidents | 0 days |
|---|---|
| Illnesses | 14 days |
One divergence to settle before you rely on it: the 2025 policy wording I read sets no waiting period for accidents and 14 days for illnesses, while several public pages display 14 days for both, and some states allow the illness wait to be waived. Waiting periods (the days after signup during which claims are not covered) are set by your state's form, so read the declarations documents, not the marketing, before assuming day-one accident cover.
What does Pumpkin not cover?
The exclusion list follows the standard American form. The friction reported by customers is not in the list itself but in how the pre-existing clause gets applied to conditions that come and go.
| Exclusion | Detail |
|---|---|
| Pre-existing conditions | Excluded (any issue noticed before the policy starts) |
| Preventive care without the add-on | Excluded from the insurance plan itself |
| Elective and cosmetic procedures | Excluded |
| Breeding and pregnancy | Excluded |
| Behavioral problems | Listed as excluded in the 2025 policy wording, despite the 2026 site |
The clause to watch is pre-existing requalification on recurring conditions. Complaint files describe gastrointestinal troubles, ear infections and eye problems that return over time being reclassified as pre-existing, and one case where a weight loss was counted as a symptom in order to declare an entire illness pre-existing and refuse the claim. The insurer is within the wording's letter; the owner experiences it as a moving target. If your pet has any recurring niggle, get its status in writing at enrollment.
Two more boundaries deserve a look. Behavioral care is advertised on the 2026 site but listed among the exclusions in the 2025 policy wording I read, so treat that line as unconfirmed until your state form says otherwise. And Preventive Essentials, the routine-care pack refunded at 100 percent, is a separate non-insurance product that is simply not sold in Maine, Montana, Rhode Island or Washington.
Pumpkin prices and reimbursement in 2026
Prices are quote-based, and the samples frame the range. A young mixed-breed dog runs about 32 dollars a month and a young domestic cat about 15 dollars, rising toward 80 and 28 dollars at age 8. On a heavier configuration, a 2026 editorial sample averages 95.02 dollars a month for dogs and 45.89 for cats at the 90 percent setting. A 10 percent multi-pet discount applies from the second animal.
Position the price honestly: above the market average at comparable coverage, which the 2026 editorial reviews agree on, and justified in part by real inclusions, the 90 percent default, exam fees, PumpkinNow. The renewal curve is the caution: on record, a Golden Retriever moved from 53 to 96 dollars a month within three years, and senior quotes above 300 dollars a month recur in owner reports. The whole sector raises prices with age, but at this starting point the same percentage increase costs you more in dollars. Quote the senior age before you commit to the puppy price.
PumpkinNow is an advance to you, not a payment to your clinic. The 24/7 urgent-pay service takes a qualifying emergency bill, above 1,000 dollars, and sends up to 90 percent of the funds to your account while you are still at the vet, before you have paid. You must set it up in advance, and the clinic still gets paid by you. That distinction matters when comparing: Trupanion pays equipped hospitals directly at checkout, while Pumpkin neutralizes the cash advance without touching how the clinic is paid. For everything non-urgent, the classic route applies: photo of the bill online, reimbursement typically within the week according to reviewers.
Reimbursement scenarios
Basil, mixed-breed dog, 5 years - emergency surgery with PumpkinNow
Basil swallows a corn cob and needs emergency surgery billed at 4,500 dollars, above the PumpkinNow qualifying threshold. His owner activated the service at enrollment and carries the 90 percent setting with a 100 dollar deductible.
- Bill submitted from the clinic, before payment
- After the 100 dollar deductible: 4,400 dollars at 90 % = 3,960 dollars sent to the owner's account
- Owner then settles the clinic, with a net out-of-pocket of 540 dollars
Daisy, domestic shorthair, 3 years - ear infection visit
Daisy develops an ear infection. The visit, consultation included, is billed at 400 dollars. Her owner runs the 90 percent setting with a 100 dollar deductible, already partly used this year.
- The exam fee counts as an eligible cost, unlike at most US competitors
- After the 100 dollar deductible: 300 dollars at 90 % = 270 dollars back
- Owner's share: 130 dollars on this first claim of the year
Ace, Golden Retriever, 8 years - chronic condition
Ace develops a chronic condition costing about 2,000 dollars a year in eligible care. Enrollment was possible at his age, since the brand applies no upper age limit, at the 90 percent setting with a 100 dollar deductible.
- Each year: 2,000 minus the 100 dollar deductible, at 90 % = 1,710 dollars back
- Owner's share: 290 dollars of care per year, plus the premium
- The premium is the real variable: senior quotes above 300 dollars a month are on record

What services and support does Pumpkin offer?
| Service | Availability |
|---|---|
| PumpkinNow urgent pay | 24/7, up to 90 % of a qualifying bill above $1,000 sent before you pay, prior setup required |
| Direct payment to the clinic | Not offered, funds go to the owner |
| Claim submission | Online, with a photo of the bill; fastest claim advertised at 2 minutes |
| Preventive Essentials | Optional routine-care pack refunded at 100 % (not sold in ME, MT, RI, WA) |
| Multi-pet discount | 10 % from the second pet |
| Choice of veterinarian | Any licensed vet in the US and Canada |
The service experience is the brand's strongest asset, and the reviews are unusually specific about it: claims paid in under a week, a photo of the invoice as the whole filing process, heavy cases followed through, lymphoma and eye-implant treatments among them. Support is described as human and reachable, with the occasional dropped email caught up by an agent afterwards. For a five-year-old company, the operational maturity is the surprise of this review.
What do customers say about Pumpkin?
On Trustpilot, Pumpkin holds 4.8 out of 5 across 3,499 reviews (snapshot of July 22, 2026), ranked first of 17 US pet insurers, with 90 percent five-star ratings and 4 percent one-star, against 15 percent one-star at Healthy Paws. The volume is fresh, 1,595 reviews in the last twelve months, and the company answers 91 percent of negative reviews within about a week. Recurring themes: fast payment, effortless filing, and serious conditions actually covered.
The counterpoint lives on the Better Business Bureau and Reddit, where the same three motifs repeat: renewal increases first, the 53 to 96 dollar Golden Retriever being the documented example; pre-existing requalification on recurring conditions second; and billing frictions third, auto-renewal at a higher price, a double charge, early-cancellation penalties described as unclear at signup. The national press covering the sector's price complaints cites the brand as a market participant, not as a bad actor.
My reading: this is the healthiest reputation profile of the US panel, and it comes with an asterisk of youth. A brand launched in 2020 has simply not yet renewed the same customers ten times, which is where reputations in this industry are lost. The early renewal signals are the thing to watch.
How to contact and cancel Pumpkin
| Channel | Details |
|---|---|
| Headquarters | 666 3rd Ave, Floor 23, New York, NY |
| Phone | (866) 273-6369 |
| Underwriter | United States Fire Insurance Company (Crum & Forster group) |
| Founded | April 2020, by Zoetis; majority owned by JAB Holding since May 2023 |
| Enrollment | Online direct, and via the Pawlicy Advisor marketplace |
Two ownership changes in five years, Zoetis to JAB, are worth knowing rather than worrying about: the underwriter, a Crum & Forster company with a century of history, is the entity that carries your risk and your claims.
| Situation | Terms |
|---|---|
| Auto-renewal | Automatic, at the new premium; complaints report increases discovered at billing |
| Early cancellation | Penalties reported in complaint files as unclear at signup, ask for terms in writing |
| Age-based termination | None, coverage continues whatever the age |
Three precautions cost nothing at signup. Ask for the cancellation terms and any early-termination penalty in writing. Note the renewal date and read the new premium before it is charged, since auto-renewal applies it by default. And keep your payment records: the double-charge cases in the complaint files were resolved, but by owners who could document them.
The best alternatives to Pumpkin in 2026
Against the other US insurers in our pet insurance comparison, three profiles make sense depending on what you optimize for.
Partner alternatives
One uncapped accident and illness plan with two day claims, owned and underwritten by Chubb.
Read reviewThe only US plan with no payout caps and a lifetime per-condition deductible
Read reviewThe most granular plan builder on the US market, with a rare zero deductible option and no upper age limit.
Read reviewBroad everyday cover with sick-visit exam fees, full adult dental and telehealth in the standard plan.
Read reviewDigital-first insurer with the market's lowest entry prices and AI claims paid in minutes.
Read reviewTrupanion is the structural alternative: no payout caps, a per-condition deductible, and true direct payment at equipped clinics, with a longer illness wait. Healthy Paws offers uncapped payouts and two-day claims at a lower entry price, but excludes the exam fees this plan includes. ASPCA serves budget-first owners with limits from 2,500 dollars and wellness add-ons, at the cost of much slower claims. None of the three matches this brand's review profile.
